While the pieces of art hanging on the walls of the Guggenheim Museum may be renowned, the paint applied to them is little more than an afterthought to visitors. But for the New York City museum’s staff, it’s an essential part of any good show; besides brilliant curating and impeccable lighting, the museum also assesses what color walls would best complement the works on view.

The effect may be subtle, but it’s substantial enough to inspire two collections of paint colors available to aspiring collectors. Launching this fall is Guggenheim Color by Fine Paints of Europe, with 200 different cans of hues for homes. The first 150 shades are part of the Classical Colors collection, which is mined from some of the Guggenheim’s most famous permanent collection pieces. Among the artists whose color palette made the cut are Paul Cezanne, Vasily Kandinsky, and Vincent van Gogh.

The other 50 shades are part of the Gallery Colors collection, which features what a selection of curators, artists, and designers (Frank Lloyd Wright, the architect behind the museum’s iconic building, is among them) think are best for complementing the work you’ve already got hanging on your walls. Whether or not a new coat of paint will boost the value of that flea market find framed above your couch remains to be seen, but it will certainly make it look better.
