New tea shops taking over NYC

Tea Time

Having a proper tea is ritual, but brewing tea is an art. Three NYC tea shops caught the attention of citygoers, tea lovers, and the java drinker looking to break away from the ordinary caffeine routine.

Bosie Tea Parlor has pastry gods Pichet Ong and Max Brenner calling this intimate Greenwich Village teahouse their favorite in the city. One long inhale of the Sweet Dreams tea, made from Egyptian chamomile blended with lavender and vanilla, and you will have the same reaction. Owners Kiley Holliday and Nicky Dawda, who started the online retail company l’Âge de Thé, source small quantities of the highest-quality tea direct from estates around the world. Pastries—including jasmine macarons, delicate vanilla rum canelés, and a decadent salted caramel and chocolate ganache creation called Eclipse—are made in-house by pastry chef Damien Herrgott, who hails from Pierre Hermé and Ladurée in Paris. Order the champagne afternoon tea service and you will be showered with tea sandwiches, macarons, scones and clotted cream, pastries, a glass of champagne—and, of course, truly exquisite tea.
Owner Nicky Dawda recommends: Blue Darjeeling. This “champagne of teas,” from Phoobsering Gardens, is toasty and floral with a slight vegetal flavor and muscat grape aroma.

Montreal-based DavidsTea
s take the intimidation out of gourmet loose-leaf tea. Inside the sleek Bleecker Street storefront, the friendliest of experts will guide you to the exact right brew for you--whether it’s the Exotica, a blend of lemongrass, red pepper, and coconut, or the Grand Cru Matcha green tea. The store also carries an assortment of tea accessories and gifts, like the Tea Aficionado, a boxed set of five gourmet teas in containers that resemble cigars, including Whisky White, Assam Banaspaty, Earl Grey, Toasted Walnut, and Buttered Rum.
Owner’s recommendation: Chocolate Chili Chai, a blend of black tea, chocolate, and ancho and Aleppo chilis.

Sullivan Street Tea & Spice Company, a small, cozy store on Sullivan Street, was opened by Mark Greenberg, a co-owner of Grounded, where he sells more than 60 varieties of organic loose-leaf tea. He sources them from Makaibari Estate in Darjeeling and family-run tea farms in China. At the adorable west village location, he custom blends teas from herbs and spices carried at the shop, including medicinal-detox and calming blends. Come for the tea, but you’d be foolish not to pick up a couple of Sullivan Street’s custom-blended spice rubs and culinary salts on your way out.
Owner’s recommendation: Milk Oolong. A Taiwanese oolong from tea trees planted in coconut groves, infusing the leaves with a milky, coconut flavor.
